Shivayogi Mahaswamiji

Mahantha Shivayogi Swamiji
Lovingly known as Mangalanatha Shivayogi and Mangalanatha Ajja, his 113-year life of meditation, healing, and compassion
transformed Bebi Hills into a sacred pilgrimage site and continues to guide generations of devotees.
Divine Birth and Early Life
Sri Sri Maridevaru Shivayogi Mahaswamiji is revered as a divine incarnation, an eternal being who dedicated his life to uplift society through education, devotion, and selfless service.
He was born to the pious couple Sri Balaji and Smt. Jayamma of Sangli, Maharashtra after many years of childlessness. Their prayers at Sri Durdandeshwara Mutt were answered when they received blessings in a dream. Soon after, the couple was blessed with the birth of Sri Maridevaru Shivayogi Mahaswamiji — a child destined for divinity.
From childhood, he displayed an extraordinary inclination towards spirituality, meditation, and rituals. Idols of gods were his toys, and prayer was his play. Recognizing his spiritual spark, the Seer of Durdandeshwara Mutt requested his parents to entrust the boy to the Mutt for higher spiritual training.
Spiritual Journey and Education
Although born into a wealthy family, Maridevaru Shivayogi had little interest in material pleasures. He pursued a life of simplicity and service, thirsting for spiritual growth. Under the guidance of his Guru, he immersed himself in the study of Vedas, meditation, and Shaiva traditions.
Over time, he travelled across Karnataka, staying at several holy places including Durdandeshwara Mutt, Muragoda (Belgaum); Belavadi; and Durdandeshwara Mutt, Bailahongala (Belgaum).
His spiritual discipline and radiance earned him immense respect, and devotees lovingly referred to him as Mangalanatha Shivayogi and Mangalanatha Ajja.
Mission of Service and Pilgrimage
Swamiji embodied the principle of a true Jangama — a wandering monk who, like flowing water, moves to spread knowledge and dharma. He travelled restlessly across the country, meditating, preaching, and guiding devotees.
At Dharwad, he spent years in meditation, attaining deep spiritual powers that enabled him to heal the sick, comfort the distressed, and inspire thousands. His words became a source of guidance, and his presence brought harmony and strength to communities.
Healing Powers and Compassion
Sri Maridevaru Shivayogi Mahaswamiji became renowned for his healing powers and spiritual wisdom. Many ailments that could not be cured by medicine found relief through his blessings and herbal remedies.
“He served all, without discrimination of caste, class, or status — ensuring even the last person in society received divine blessings.”
Legacy and Recognition
Swamiji lived for 113 years, dedicating his entire life to the welfare of people. His presence transformed Beby Hills into a sacred pilgrimage site, home to temples of Mahadeshwara and Siddeshwara, enriched by the spiritual vibrations of his meditation.
The Sri Durdandeshwara Mutt at Beby village was inaugurated in 1994 by Dr. Sri Sri Sri Shivakumara Mahaswamiji of Siddaganga Mutt, Tumkur. Swamiji continued to guide devotees, conduct pujas on auspicious days and full moon (Purnima), and inspire generations through his teachings.
